RESUMO

BACKGROUND: Actinic cheilitis is induced by chronic exposure to ultraviolet radiation and shows solar elastosis, a feature that has been associated with mast cell infiltrates. This study aimed to investigate the area of solar elastosis, collagen loss, and mast cell infiltrates in a series of actinic cheilitis. METHODS: We evaluated the epithelial dysplasia in 52 cases of actinic cheilitis and the solar elastosis with Weigert's resorcin-fuchsin. Collagen loss was evaluated with Picrosirius red, analyzed under polarized microscopy, and scored from 1 to 3. Elastosis proportionate area (EPA) was calculated with image software. Mast cells were highlighted with toluidine blue stain. RESULTS: EPA varied from 2% to 45%, with a mean of 17.1% in the cases, with no differences among epithelial dysplasia degrees. Most cases presented collagen loss scores of 2 or 3, and higher loss of type I collagen was associated with older age. Mast cell density was higher in severe epithelial dysplasia (P = 0.002) and in high-risk cases (P = 0.01). CONCLUSION: Actinic cheilitis presented variable EPA and marked loss of type I collagen; however, these features were not associated with the degrees of epithelial dysplasia. Besides, mast cell density increased with epithelial dysplasia worsening and this was not associated with elastosis area or collagen loss.

RESUMO

OBJECTIVE: The aim of this study was compare the expression of WNT5A and MMP2, 7 and 20, in frequent benign odontogenic tumors and odontogenic cysts, since these lesions have a different biological behavior. MATERIALS AND METHODS: Eighty-one paraffin-embedded specimens of odontogenic tumors, including ameloblastoma and keratocystic odontogenic tumor, and thirty-two odontogenic cysts were used for immunohistochemical analysis. RESULTS: The expression of WNT5A in odontogenic tumors and inflammatory cyst was higher than in developmental odontogenic cyst. There was no statistical difference (p<0.05) in the expression of WNT5A when comparing the analyzed tumors. The expression of MMP7 was lower in RC with a statistical difference when compared with all tumors and cysts. Statistical differences also occurred when comparing glandular odontogenic cyst (GOC) to keratocyst odontogenic tumor (KOT) and calcifying cystic odontogenic tumor (CCOT). MMP20 expression was higher in ameloblastoma when compared to adenomatoid odontogenic tumor (AOT), DC and GOC. The expression of MMP20 was lower in CCOT when compared to all tumors and cysts. CONCLUSIONS: The expression of WNT5A in a group of odontogenic lesions suggests the participation of a non-canonical WNT signaling pathway in the progression and maintenance of these lesions. These molecules are possibly involved in the biological differences between odontogenic tumors and cysts. Considering previous studies, WNT5A may help promote the calcification seen in AOT, CCOT and CEOT by activating MMP7.

In this study, 30 cases of formalin-fixed and paraffin-embedded B-cell lymphomas of the oral region were submitted to immunohistochemistry for the detection of proteins c-Myc, Bcl-2, Bcl-6 and cyclin D1. Fourty percent (40%) of the studied cases were positive for c-Myc, 10% for cyclin D1, 83.3% for Bcl-2 and 53.3% for Bcl-6. The analysis of these proteins has fundamental importance for the diagnosis and treatment course of hematopoietic diseases, because they are involved in various processes controlling gene transcription and cell cycle. All cases were diffuse large B-cell lymphomas, the subtype with the highest incidence. The analysis of these proteins is very important for the diagnosis and treatment course of hematopoietic diseases, because they are involved in various processes controlling gene transcription, cell cycle and apoptotic processes and an increase in the knowledge of their action in different subtypes of lymphomas can corroborate to other studies
